Fitting A Racing Style Fuel Cap
posted in Exterior |
This modification varies on the car manufacturer as they all come in different shapes and sizes. This is a simple task which wouldn’t take much effort if you know what you are doing. There are other alternatives if you don’t fancy dismantling your car, you can buy stick on covers that can be fitted by absolutely anyone but be warned – the finished effect will not look as good if you put the little extra effort in replacing the whole fuel cap.

First off you need to open up your existing fuel cap and see how it’s fixed to the car. Most of them are only held in place by a couple of screw, undo these and he fuel cap will be able to be removed from your vehicle. |
| Once the fuel cap itself has been removed you need use the same method to remove the catch located at the opposite side. If you have central locking you have to be careful and slide it off of the operating rod to avoid any damage. | ![]() |

If your car doesn’t have central locking then you can skip this stage, you will have to disconnect the flap motor wiring. You can get better access to this by removing the removing the rear light and the trim inside the boot. |
| After you have removed all of the old components it’s time to try your new sporty filler surround to see if it needs any reshaping to get that perfect fit. If it seems to fit perfect you should skip to step 6 of this guide. | ![]() |

If it doesn’t fit into the hole perfectly then you should be careful when sanding it down, always keep trying to fit it so you don’t over sand the filler making it useless. When it’s ready to be fitted you are advised to spray it now, this will make your life easier in the long run. |
| Once the fuel filler is all ready to be installed ensure that the hole is clean before you apply any mastic, this will guarantee you get the maximum lifetime out of your new modification. | ![]() |

More times than not you will be supplied suitable mastic in the kit you bought. If you weren’t, make sure that it is petrol resistant and then apply a thick layer around the edge of the hole and around the inside edge of the filler where it fits over the filler neck. |
| Align the surround in place and then press it in firmly making sure it has reached the bottom. It’s advised that you stick some tape over it holding it in place until the mastic is dry. Leave it overnight (at least a few hours) to get the best results and avoid having to repeat it all again. | ![]() |

When you are happy that the mastic has set you need to decide what position you want the metal surround to sit and mark up the holes ready to be drilled. Be careful at this stage as you would have to remove it and start again if you were to drill the holes incorrectly. |
| Make sure that you fit the cork gasket supplied in the kit before you install in metal surround. | ![]() |

Once everything in place you can screw the metal surround in place with the screws provided. |
| The last step is to just fit the cap and stand back and admire your new sporty fuel filler! | ![]() |
